job_description_responsibilities:
This position requires a high degree of experience and expertise in various or specific fields of manufacturing such as welding, heat treat, manufacturing technology, etc. Incumbent needs to have a good understanding of product design to combine with process design expertise to provide for improved manufacturability of parts and major components.
Provides direction and guidance to other manufacturing personnel in a continuous effort to improve manufacturing productivity. Works with suppliers (both internal and external) in the development of projects, which ensure the most efficient and cost effective systems or operations to produce quality products.
This position is actively involved with suppliers to analyze their current or proposed product/process designs to determine feasibility of using existing designs or modifying the designs to improve process and/or product. Ensures Engineering, Purchasing and shop personnel both at Caterpillar and suppliers are involved in the approval process so that sound decisions are made which improve manufacturing processes, quality and/or reduce costs. Uses knowledge gained through years of experience to explain to suppliers the tooling, dies, fixtures, etc., needed to improve processes.
Determines adaptability of existing corporate applications and prepares feasibility studies for new applications. Coordinates various existing systems and operations with new systems and operations to ensure compatibility and directs others to modify systems accordingly to implement total package.
Provides leadership in the implementation of integrated technologies within the factory. Develops individual presentations on all integration projects and prepares and establishes priorities for cost effectiveness. Performs liaison duties with various functional areas to promote smooth transition of new and revised corporate and plant systems and operations.
Adheres to established standards, policies and practices relating to quality, cost reduction, safety, ergonomics, etc., in performing assigned duties.
This position is responsible for the implementation of major systems and the coordination of those systems with the total plant.
The position manages the completion of its own work assignments and coordinates work with others. The position is challenged to quickly and correctly identify problems. The incumbent generally resolves issues by following departmental guidelines or applying a solution that worked in the past. The incumbent is free to determine the best way to complete job assignments in order to achieve desired results. Work is reviewed after completion, except in the most complex or high impact situations. Impacts key quality goals including Customer Satisfaction, Continuous Improvement, Timeliness, Accuracy, Efficiency, Cost Savings, Process Quality, Part Quality, ISO 9000 Certification, etc. The position meets or exceeds quality standard set for the measure(s) stated.
required_skills_qualifications: Requires considerable experience in the various manufacturing disciplines gained through previous staff and/ or supervisory assignments. Requires analytical ability as well as excellent oral and written communications skills and thorough knowledge concerning the capabilities of both domestic and foreign suppliers. This position would normally be promoted from Manufacturing Engineer 3 or Manufacturing Engineering supervisor. This position requires a college degree in an appropriate engineering or technical discipline combined with a) minimum of 2 years of appropriate manufacturing experience as either a Manufacturing Project Engineer 1 or b) minimum 2 years experience as a Mfg Engrg Supervisor 2 or c) appropriate equivalent external experience (15 -20 years).
desired_skills_qualifications:
xperience with heavy duty, low volume Powertrain (Transmissions, Axles, final drives) component manufacturing engineering is desired. A deep knowledge of testing proceedures is also a plus.
